In working with many small business owners, the first question that often pops into their mind is, "How can I get something done for free?"
One of my biggest tasks is getting them to recondition their thinking to ask, "How can I get it done most effectively and efficiently, leveraging my time and achieving the highest return on investment?" Free is not always free, particularly when it causes you to waste your time. Many people do not factor in the value of their time or the opportunity cost when they opt for the cheaper or free solution. In fact, most small business owners do not even know the dollar value of their time. They are often so blinded by cost that they miss the overwhelming value that a higher price product or service may provide. This is particularly the case when investing in marketing, R&D, new technologies, advisors, and staffing. I don't believe in bootstrapping businesses and trying to do things cheap. I believe in doing things right . Focusing on free will ultimately cost you a lot more time and money. The key to success is not thinking in terms of free, but efficiency and return on investment.
