Financial Term of the Week
P/E Ratio (Price-to-Earnings Ratio) The P/E Ratio is the simplest and most common measure for determining how cheap or expensive a particular stock is.
Calculated as the price of a stock divided by its earnings per share, the PE ratio reveals how much investors are willing to pay per dollar of company earnings. If a company has P/E of 25, it means that an investor is willing to pay $25
for $1 of the company's earnings. P/E ratios can also help investors compare the value of multiple stocks. If one stock has a P/E that is twice as large as another, it is probably a less attractive investment.
For accurate analysis, it is best to use comparable stocks when evaluating P/E ratios. Comparing the P/Es of companies which are not in the same industry, country, or over different time periods may be misleading and dangerous.
The P/E ratio is also referred to as "P/E", "PE", "earnings multiple" or "multiple." Are your stocks overpriced?
