Nothing significant is ever accomplished alone. It will take the support and resources of others. If you want people to help you and feel good about it, you will need to understand how to enhance your personal power and influence.
POWER
Dictionaries define power as the ability to do or act; the capability of doing or accomplishing something. In physics, power is defined as the rate at which work is done. It is the work/time ratio. These two
definitions are key to understanding how to develop your own personal power, of which there are three major components: Clear Direction, Decisive Action, and Continuous Assessment.
- Clear Direction
Firmly establish in your mind that which you intend to accomplish and record it on paper. Believe with certainty that you will attain this desire and use that belief as your driving force. Eliminate all negative influences.
- Decisive Action
As alluded to in the physics definition, time is an important factor to power. The more meaningful actions you are able to take in the shortest time, the greater your personal power. It is critical that you obtain knowledgeable advisors and the right team to accelerate your success. You must then act quickly and decisively once you have the proper information.
Continuous Assessment
Always evaluate the effects of your actions to determine what must be changed.
Then vary your approach as necessary. Continue this process until you have reached your goal.
In order for personal power to be effective you must take decisive action toward a clear objective, adjusting your approach when necessary.
INFLUENCE
There is one rule—the simplest, most beneficial way to influence other people is to speak in terms of their interests and show them how or help them attain what they desire.
Remember, 80% of your success will be the result of soft skills—your ability to network, form mentoring relationships, strategic partnerships and joint ventures. These all require you to boost your personal power and influence .

Relatively speaking, for the small investment necessary to hire a good publicist, these are huge benefits that can translate into hundreds-of-thousands or millions of dollars for you.
Many new entrepreneurs start their businesses with the misconception that "if I create a great product, it will sell itself." What these entrepreneurs do not realize is that cost-effectively marketing their products and services is usually much harder than creating them.
While some parts of marketing and publicity are an art, many parts are a detailed science. The parts which are a science should be calculated in your business plan (i.e. cost to acquire a prospect, cost to acquire a customer, conversion rates, life-time value of a customer, etc.). If you know these numbers, it will be very easy to gauge the potential return-on-investment from any marketing or publicity effort.
I always suggest budgeting to hire an outside PR team. It is worth it because it frees up your time to focus on other important aspects of the business. A good PR team will also have relationships that can make things happen for you a lot quicker. You have a short window of opportunity to make your business successful, so leverage your time and utilize experts to the fullest. However, in order to receive the highest return on investment from your marketing and publicity efforts, you will need clear objectives, quantifiable measures of success, and a way of tracking the effectiveness of every campaign.
