Commercial Paper (CP)
Unsecured debt instruments issued by companies to meet short-term financing needs. The four basic kinds of CP include promissory notes, drafts, checks, and certificates of deposit. These instruments have maturities ranging from 2 to 270 days, with the most common maturity range being 50 days or less. CP is usually offered by large corporations with impeccable credit and is generally regarded as a very safe investment. CP is one of the common underlying investments of money market mutual funds and is rated by organizations such as Standard & Poor's and Moody's.
