Custodial Account
An account opened on behalf of a minor by an adult who acts as custodian. The custodian is usually the child's parent or guardian. By law, minors cannot enter into contracts or make securities transactions. Custodial accounts become a means for parents to help their children save and invest. Once the minor is of age (18, 21, or 25 depending on the state and type of account), he or she may seize control of the account's assets.
